The summer rock programme in Tivoli is mostly horrible Danish mainstream fodder - but among the few exceptions this year were Oklamhoma's finest The Flaming Lips - whom I'd never seen in concert before. And thankfully, the pesky rain stopped well before the show.
I just have a soft spot for these guys. They have a unique style - merging 70es psychedelica and symphonic rock into their trademark lo-fi indie sound. And Wayne Coyne (my personal favourite for the title of the nicest guy on earth) adds the final touch with his remarkably fragile vocals.
And uniquely among indie bands, they succeed in presenting no less than a celebration of life - without even remotely turning naive or superficial. It's a celebration of life as it is - full of sadness, danger and absurdity. But also offering bursts of pure joy - as illustrated by the endless offering of balloons, confetti and quirky visuals. And any show that ends with the powerful hymn to joy and sadness "Do You Realize?" can't help but put a smile on even this hardened old cynic's face.
