In true tourist fashion, we went to Grenen - the tip of Jutland, just north of Skagen. This is where the North Sea meets Kattegat, the waves coming in from either side of the small strip of sand. The quaint, tractor-pulled cart, Sandormen (the sand worm) took us there and back.
Afterwards, we had lunch at the illustrious Brøndums Hotel, former meeting place of the Skagen Painters. Good food and fine wine - but it seemed to be a rather quiet day...
Then, a visit to the home of Anna and Michael Ancher, now a museum. Unfortunately, the home of the Krøyers is not accessible to the public, but we went there anyway, trying to figure out where in the garden exactly the famous Hip Hip Hurra table stood.

The Skagen Museum had a huge special exhibit, featuring all their works by the renowned Skagen painters. Quite impressive - but it confirmed my sneaking suspicion that Michael Ancher just wasn't a very good painter - his best works were probably just strokes of luck. However, most works by P.S. Krøyer stood out - pure elegance and energy, mastering the light he loved.
Much has been made of the supposedly underrated female artists among them, but while Anna Ancher certainly produced a number of fine works in her own original style, her output seems disappointingly uneven (though probably none more so than that of her rather overrated husband...).
Also paid a visit to Danish poet and painter Holger Drachmann's home - a famous portrait of Drachmann by Krøyer was painted in Drachmann's studio.

Drove off to Skagen - the town furthest to the north in mainland Denmark. After a bike ride around the little town, savouring its famous bright sunlight, we had dinner at the local microbrewery Skagen Bryghus - nice food and good beer.

Following my website update, I've been experimenting with optimizing sites for mobile devices. Both my blog and the Neon Machine site should be more accessible for these little things now - feel free to check it out and let me know how it works.

Did a quick redesign of this site. Mainly cosmetic changes, though I also removed a couple of redundant links. If anything doesn't seem to be working correctly, please Let me know.
